The P-N-G Garamuts have been embarrassed by 245 runs in their final group match against India at the Under 19 Cricket World Cup.
India made 301 batting first with Alei Nao the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 46 from his ten overs.

In reply the Garamuts were bowled out for 56, with Riley Hekure and Hiri Hiri the only batsmen to make it into double figures.

PNG will now play New Zealand on Sunday night in their first classification match to decide 9th to 16th places.

PNG Hunters score shock Round 1 win

The PNG Hunters have enjoyed a dream Intrust Super Cup debut, stunning the highly fancied Redcliffe Dolphins 24-18 in Round 1 action.

In other opening round fixtures Cowboys hopefuls Cameron King and Ricky Thorby each scored tries in the Northern Pride's 36-0 defeat of Sunshine Coast, Easts won the grand final rematch over Mackay 40-12, Norths defeated Ipswich in a gruelling encounter 22-16, Burleigh won at home 36-24 over the Capras and in the battle of the Seagulls, Wynnum Manly accounted for Tweed Heads 32-28.

At Redcliffe, all the pre-season excitement and anticipation surrounding the debut of rugby league’s latest experiment reached a crescendo at a packed Dolphin Oval. Curiosity had swept throughout the peninsula prior to kick-off as a healthy mixture of faithful Redcliffe supporters and a large contingent of PNG followers gathered on the surrounding hills.

What the crowd witnessed was a thoroughly professional and polished performance by the Hunters, who were physically imposing from kick-off.

One of the Dolphins forwards in the thick of the action was Brisbane Bronco David Hala, who was called from the bench in the 20th minute to throw his 109-kilogram frame at the enthusiastic PNG defence.

But even the 30-game NRL star struggled to deal with an imposing Hunters’ pack.

“It was a physical game out there. They came out firing and we couldn’t hold onto the ball or complete our sets,” Hala told NRL.com.

“It was a pretty good effort by the boys. We tried our best until the end, but credit to PNG who came out and got the win.”

PNG coach Michael Marum was obviously pleased with his side's first ISC outing, but hopes to keep the feet of his players firmly planted to the ground.

“I didn’t expect the boys to stand up like that for the first game,” Marum said.

“This is a good start to the competition and we will hope to build on that.”

The Hunters were greeted with a huge bipartisan roar from the fans as they took the field. They began the contest in enthusiastic fashion, dominating the opening five minutes and almost crossing the line, only to be held up on the last tackle.

The Hunters were unrelenting with their physical approach and slick ball movement, which soon paid dividends.

From a penalty the Hunters had Redcliffe backpedalling with fullback Adex Wera turning the ball back on the inside for PNG captain Israel Eliab to cross for the opener after 13 minutes.

The visitors doubled their lead to 12 less than five minutes later through Thompson Teteh. The PNG centre dashed down the left touchline, weaving his way infield and selling two beautiful dummies to the Redcliffe defence on his way to a 50-metre try under the posts.

The Dolphins managed a quick reply when winger Brett Coutts crossed out wide after being set up by skipper Marty Hatfield, Liam Georgetown nailing the sideline conversion to narrow the deficit to 12-6 after 20 minutes.

Redcliffe slowly began to claw their way back into the match and levelled the score on the half-hour mark when five-eighth Jake Marketo twisted his way over the line from close range.

A penalty adjacent to the posts inside the opening minute of the second half gifted PNG an easy two points, which they duly accepted to take the score to 14-12.

Two quick tries to the Hunters courtesy of winger Garry Lo and back-rower Lawrence Tu’u, both on the left edge, extended their lead to 22-12 with 30 minutes remaining.

The home side set up a nail-biting finish courtesy of a converted try to winger Monikura Tikinau and the contest ebbed and flowed throughout the next 15 minutes with Redcliffe often threatening the PNG line.

But in a positive indicator of their prospects in the competition, the Hunters' defence held strong and they soon bullocked their way down field, forcing the home side into conceding a penalty.

Man of the match Sebatian Pandia stepped forward to take the shot, hit the left upright and saw the ball ricochet over the posts and seal an historic 24-18 victory.

The Hunters will now enjoy the next three rounds of the Intrust Super Cup at their home ground on Kokopo Island and could very well be undefeated after four rounds if they carry on with the style and substance they displayed against Redcliffe.

PNG Hunters 24 (Israel Eliab, Thompson Teteh, Garry Lo, Lawrence Tu’u tries; Roger Laka 3, Sebastian Pandia goals) def. Redcliffe Dolphins 18 (Brett Coutts, Jake Marketo, Monikura Tikinau tries; Liam Georgetown 3 goals) at Dolphin Oval, Redcliffe. Half-time: 12-all. Channel Nine Man of the Match: Sebastian Pandia.

AN Australian firm, SGL Consulting, will provide expertise and guidance in assisting with the implementation of legacy plans for venues being built and modified for the 2015 Pacific Games.
The firm with offices throughout Australia has 25 years experience in developing and operating business plans for sporting venues throughout the world.
The venues include the Sir John Guise Stadium and Sports Complex, the Bisini Parade sports grounds, the Rita Flynn Netball Courts and the Taurama Aquatic Centre and Gymnasium.
In this project, SGL will team up with Victorian State Sports Centres Trust, the organisation that runs the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the State Netball and the Melbourne School of Sport and Recreation Management.
To add to the team of experts SGL has also teamed up with ETS, a multinational firm who has offices in Port Moresby, while local consultants will also be engaged to assist.
Over the next 14 months the firm will assist the Pacific Games Legacy Committee to determine costs and revenue opportunities of the venues, requirements for management and maintenance of the facilities, and the ongoing governance and management model required by the PNG Sports Foundation to operate these facilities.
SGL will meet with all applicable sporting codes to assess their needs and requirements for their sports, as well as the need for public access to these facilities.
The Minister for Sports and 2015 Pacific Games, Justin Tkatchenko is fully supportive of this.
“The investment that our Government is making in these venues is for all the people of PNG. These facilities must be well maintained and managed for the next 30 years. The venues will not only support our developing and elite athletes, but will also host important national and international events. It must provide an affordable base of recreation and other community needs for all our citizens. The work that SGL Consulting will do is an important step that we are taking now to ensure that immediately after the Pacific Games conclude in July 2015, that they will be ready to support the needs of the men, women, and families of PNG,” Tkatchenko said.
Mike King, SGL Consulting’s chief executive officer thanked  the National Government and the Pacific Games Authority for allowing his company to handle the post games facilities planning.
“SGL is thrilled to work with the PNG Government and sport authorities to assist with this critical part of the venue development programme. We understand the unique nature of this rich and diverse country, and our planning models will reflect a ‘Made in PNG’ approach that will be sustainable here,” King said.

PNG Hunters impress all

IT is certainly early days but the Papua New Guinea Hunters’ 24-18 win over Redcliffe Dolphins on Sunday has created quite a stir.
Almost everybody who watched the win on television was impressed, with the social media inundated with rave reviews on the SP Hunters’ performance.
Leading media organisations in Australia gave extensive coverage to PNG – something they rarely do unless it is related to something bad in this country.
The NRL website gave the Hunters a big write-up on Sunday, segments of which were used on other Australian media. Brisbane-based Courier-Mail dedicated a fair-sized article to the Queensland Cup newcomers under the headline “Papua New Guinea Hunters hit the big time with a win and a song”.
The article reported that Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had texted a congratulatory message to the team through Minister for Sports Justin Tkatchenko, who was at the game.
The Courier-Mail, had sent a journalist to cover the Hunters set-up prior to the season opener, and their efforts seemed to have been right on the money – documenting the establishment of a team would create some waves.
After Sunday, they continued the coverage, reporting that Tkatchenko embraced coach Michael Marum shortly after the final siren.
“The boys have worked extra, extra hard for this and it’s vindication for the hard work they have put into it,” Tkatchenko was quoted as saying.
“The country has gone crazy, the Prime Minister just texted me and said well done to everybody and it’s fantastic. We’re very proud.
“(The World Cup) was a huge disappointment so I’m a very happy Minister to get a run on the board for our team and look forward to many more wins and Queensland be warned, the Hunters are on the move.”
Steve Mascord, a respected rugby league writer, in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald “Set of Six” – wrote that Poachers are Welcome” PNG has a message for NRL scouts.
“Please steal our players. And Manly may be about to take the advice; Set Of Six’s sources at Dolphin Oval during the historic 24-18 win over Redcliffe tell us forward Mark Mexico is on the verge of signing with the Sea Eagles.
Another World Cup Kumul, Wellington Albert, is already on Penrith’s books.
‘’That’s why we have entered a team in this competition,’’ PNG Rugby League chairman Sandis Tsaka said.
‘’NRL scouts don’t come to PNG. We wanted to put our players in a competition where they will be seen.
“If one player leaves, we have 15,000 kids who will want to take his place,” he said, indicating the local following of the sport.
He dedicated the fourth segment titled “It’s a gas” to the Hunters again.
Marum says Australian teams are set for a culturally enriching experience when they visit Kopoko for their away matches.
‘’Back at home, there will probably be a few gas guns outside chasing people away who are trying to get in,’’ Marum is reported to have said. “That’s the way we play the game up there; people are passionate about the game.’’ PNG Facts/ The National

The Pacific Games Council Executive Board has expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.
The board noted that the time-frame for delivery of venues remains tight but the Games Organising Committee was managing this well to ensure all was in place in time for the Games.
Pacific Games Council president Vidhya Lakhan from Fiji delivered this all-important message following last week’s visit to the Papua New Guinea capital.
“I and my Executive Board were very impressed with the state of planning and preparation demonstrated by the 2015 Games Organising Committee and the PNG Pacific Games Association during our visit,” he said in a prepared statement released from Port Moresby.
“They are aiming to host a very successful Games and the PGC Executive Board is confident they can achieve it, provided all stakeholders remain totally focused on the delivery of the Games venues in a timely manner.”
The Council held its first executive board meeting for the year in Port Moresby last week and was able to get the latest briefing and make observations on the preparations for the Games.
The PGC board toured the venues to see firsthand work progress. PNG Facts/ The National

There is one change to the PNG Hunters squad for this weekend's first home match against defending Queensland Cup rugby league premiers the Mackay Cutters.

Noel Joel has been called in to the 18-man squad, in place of Gonzella Urakusie, with one player to be omitted prior to kick off.

Coach Michael Marum says the team has been careful to ensure they return to their regular weekly routine following Sunday's historic win against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

The team is expecting a sell-out crowd at the Kalabond Stadium in Kokopo for the first game of a three-match home stand. RNZI

The Papua New Guinea Hunters have posted an upset 24 to 16 win over reigning premiers, Mackay Cutters, in round two of the Queensland Cup, also known as the Intrust Super Cup.

Playing in front of 1,500 fans in Kokopo, East New Britain Province, the Hunters scored two late tries to clinch their first win at home.

The Cutters took the lead at 10-8 at half time, with Dan Murphy scoring the first try of the match for the visitors.

But tries by Garry Lo and Thompson Teteh kept the home team within touching distance.

The visiting side looked to dampen the Hunter's hopes when forward Dan Beasley scored a converted try for a 16-14 lead.

Noel Zemming put the Hunters ahead, when he ran through for a try in the 75th minute to make it 18-16.

Giant centre, Thomspon Teteh, put the game beyond doubt when he forced his way over at the stroke of full time.

The upset victory caps a remarkable debut for the Hunters, who beat Redcliffe 24-18 in round 1.

Hunters coach, Michael Marum, said he was humbled to win their first home match.

The PNG side are at home again next week against the Central Queensland Capras.

KUMUL DEVELOPMENT MANAGERS ANNOUNCED

PNG Rugby Football League Chairman Sandis Tsaka today announced the appointment of two officers who will head the roll-out of their six programs.

Both officers have extensive experience in the game and Tsaka and CEO Brad Tassell are optimistic that their engagement would assist greatly in helping achieve the objectives of the PNGRFL.

The National Competitions Manager is Arnold Krewanty, a former Kumul who has continued to be involved with the game as a national selector and administrator.

The National Development Manager is Toksy Nema, one of the leading coaches in the country who has also been involved in the administration of the game.

Both men would be directly involved with the delivery of the PNGRFL’s six major programs:

- 6 to 12 years (PNGRFL in collaboration with the Australian
NRL/AusAid program)
- 13 to 18 years – Schoolboys
- 19 to A grade
- Digicel Cup
- SP PNG Hunters
- Kumuls/Other International fixtures

The engagement of these two will drive our programs, in line with our 2014 calendar, to many parts of the country we are currently unable to do due to lack of resources and other factors, Tsaka said.

Thirteen (13) other development officers – located at strategic parts of the country - have already been engaged and will work full-time in consultation with and under the direction of both Krewanty and Nema.

“Of course these two will work in close consultation with our CEO Brad Tassell,” Tsaka said.

This is expected to reduce the workload on Tassell, who assumes a supervisory role, like what is required to do under the direction of the PNGRFL Board.

Tsaka said that the way the public has embraced the emergence of the SP PNG Hunters has been amazing and the overwhelming following they have received has given a great positive outlook to the game in PNG.

“However, my board is equally aware that the SP PNG Hunters is just one part of this program and that is way we have structures in place to ensure the roll-out is not just cost effective but practical and conducive to this country so the game reaches areas that needed the PNGRFL’s attention.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank our Team Kumul Sponsors PNG LNG, PNG Power, Air Niugini and the NGCB. Wiothout their support rolling out this National program would not be possible.”

Tsaka said it was a daunting challenge and it would take time but everyone should be patient and try to take ownership of the delivery of the various programs and their co-operation was very important to make these plans possible.

“We want everyone be get behind what we are doing as we do not want to dwell in the past. We want to drive the game to a level that it deserves so that we can give it the national profile that it already enjoys.”

PNG HUNTERS PRAISED FOR LIFTING STANDARDS

The Papua New Guinea Hunters next opponents say the Queensland Cup newcomers have brought a new-found professionalism to the state competition.
The Hunters are one of just five unbeaten teams after two rounds, following wins against Redcliffe and reigning premiers the Mackay Cutters.
Next up the take on the Central Queensland Capras, the only team to have beaten them in their brief history in a pre season trial last month.
The Hunters squad is living and training together full-time and Capras coach Jason Hetherington says it certainly raises the standards.
"All our guys are part-time. We train a couple of times a week and they're working the rest of the time. [It's] hard for us to get a consistent full contingent of players for training due to work commitments and that out of town and all these different things but certainly having a full-time programme certainly will help them. It will educate them on the travel, it will educate them on how to play football, their strength and conditioning will be good and to me, it sounds like a terrific programme they've got running up there".

PNG Hunters down Central Queensland Capras 46 - 14

$

THE SP PNG Hunters continued their fairy-tale run with a comprehensive 46-14 win Central Queensland Capras in Kalabond, Kokopo.

That victory maintained the Hunters’ 100 percent record of three wins from three games and should push them to somewhere at the top of the Queensland Intrust Super Cup premiership table.

It was also the highest margin for the Papua New Guinea side, sending out early signals that the newcomers in Australia’s second-tier competition are going to be increasingly difficult to run down when teams allow them to set the tempo of the match.

While there were patches of the game that were mistake-riddled and areas that coach Michael Marum would obviously work hard to remove from future performances – when the Hunters controlled the football – the home side was seemingly unstoppable.

At half-time when the score was 22-10 a possible fight back by Capras looked promising when winger Rhys Williams scored the first try in the second stanza to reduce the deficit to 22-14.

But that became a daunting task when interchange player Noel Zemming scurried over for a try and started nailing the extras with a better goal kicking show.

The Hunters just grew in confidence and shifted into a higher gear with some punishing defence to the joy of the crowd which was a huge improvement mainly due to the better weather conditions compared to last week’s rain affected match.

With about 10 minutes on the clock the Hunters were safely home 40-14 and it was a case of whether they could push past the half-century mark – which was in sight if it wasn’t for some dropped balls when the last pass didn’t stick.

“It wasn’t a good day for us,” Capras coach Jason Hetherington lamented after the game before they caught their charter flight to return home via Cairns.

“We gave them too many opportunities, and they made the most of them,” captain Guy Williams said.

“We paid the price,” Hetherington, a former Canterbury Bulldogs player said.

Hunters coach Michael Marum enjoyed the win like the many others which included Minister for Sports Justin Tkatchenko and Governor Ereman ToBaining Jnr who officiated before the kick-off.

“We’ll watch the video (of the game) and analyse the errors.”

But Marum was happy that the competition for spots was intense which was healthy as players coming into the side when others were ruled out due to injury continued to play good football.

Gonzela Urakasie had to be rushed into the side late in the week due to an injury to prop Timothy Lomai but didn’t disappoint so did Esau Siune who was a handful in attack when he came off the bench.

But Marum and his high quality backroom staff continue to remind the players to keep their feet on the ground to avoid complacency creeping up on them as consistent quality performance was crucial if the Hunters wanted to maintain the wave of success so far.

The SP PNG Hunters will face off last year’s minor premiers, Northern Pride, in a fascinating top-of-the-table Intrust Super Cup clash.

Both teams have started the season with three straight wins, setting the scene for an epic contest at Kalabond Oval, Kokopo.
The SP PNG Hunters have moved up a notch on the Intrust Super Cup points table, following their decisive 46-14 win over the Central Queensland Capras on Saturday.

The Capras were on the receiving end of fast-improving Hunters, who enjoyed the perfect weather conditions to pile on 9 tries to the visitors’ three.

Six players missed out, including Adam Korave with his hamstring injury, who will be hoping to come good in this weekend’s match against the Northern Pride, before continuing their away matches in round five and six.

Both teams are locked on six points apiece, and have amassed 94 points, each in three games played so far.

Hunters’ glory minute against the Northern Pride outfit in the trial match, will put on more effect in this season’s proper match. Coach Michael Marum stays true to his word, hoping for another home ground victory.

The Queensland Rugby League provides all the match officials, referees and touch judges.

The first two visitors played the Hunters, have flown direct to Tokua Airport, on a charter flight from Cairns, but now all remaining teams will fly via direct Air Niugini Commercial routes to Kokopo.

In the other draws, Mackay Cutters will take on Manly Seagulls, Burleigh Bears go up against Ipswich Jets, Redcliffe Dolphins host East Tigers, Magpies will play Tweed Heads Seagulls and Norths Devils will be ready to scare Sunshine Coast Falcons at Bishop Park, while CQ Capras are on bye.

Kumul Prop  Mark Mexico named in Hunters squad to face Pride

PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls prop Mark Mexico finally gets his chance to break out in the Queensland Cup rugby league top of the table clash this Saturday at the Kalabond Stadium in Kokopo.
Mexico was yesterday named in the SP Brewery-sponsored PNG Hunters line-up to play competition leaders Northern Pride.
With the Hunters running a close second, the inclusion of 25-year-old Mexico will see their PNG franchise at near full-strength.
This will be Mexico’s first match, after last playing for the Kumuls during the World Cup last year.
The Hunter’s enforcer has been itching to get a run after recovering from a minor knee operation last month.
Watching from the side lines for the past three weeks has built up the fire in his belly and the young man from Wabag and Hanuabada is keen to add his 106-kilogramme frame to coach Michael Marum’s plans.
Marum yesterday said Mexico had been running well after the operation and after 14 weeks of training, they would give him a start off the bench.
Mexico was named in yesterday’s preliminary line-up, with last weekend’s bolter Noel Zemming, pictured, earning a call-up to the starting 13 at half-back.
Mexico comes in for Esau Siune and Zemming for Roger Laka.
Marum said Zemming’s form against the Central Queensland Capras was too good to ignore and it would be a good test for the playmaker.
“He (Noel) has been consistent coming off the bench and this has opened the door for Tiger (Emere) to come into the side on the bench,” Marum said.
Marum said Emere was a similar mould to impact sub Willie Minoga and would be a handful for tiring defences. He however said that other players named are also under close scrutiny with niggling injuries and changes could still be made by Friday.
Edward Goma also makes his first appearance as the 18th man.
The Hunters have a 3-0 record with their biggest victory so far, a 46-14 mauling of the Central Queensland Capras last week in Kokopo, which has them perched in second spot on the Queensland Cup points ladder.
The Pride lead the competition with a better points differential over the Hunters despite both being on six points after perfect starts the season.
SP Hunters:  Adex Wera, Garry Lo, Thompson Teteh, Albert Patak, George Benson, Israel Eliab (C), Noel Zemming, Joe Bruno, Wartovo Puara Junior, Gonzela Urakusie,  David Loko, Brandy Peter Sebastian Pandia, Tiger Emere, Willie Minoga, Lawrence Tu’u, Mark Mexico, Edward Goma (one to be omitted).

NRL CEO, Mr Dave Smith, said he was pleased to be joining Prime Minister Mr Tony Abbott’s business delegation to Papua New Guinea.

Mr Smith said the NRL is forging closer links with Papua New Guinea both on and off the field.

He said a PNG League team had been admitted to the Queenslan's Intrust Super Cup competition this year and was performing extremely well.

Mr Smith said the NRL had combined with the Australian Sports Commission and the PNG Department of Education for the League for Life program which helps young people improve their football and life skills.

“I am looking forward to seeing the way this program is using Rugby League to encourage young people to undertake education and improve their classroom skills,” Mr Smith said.

“The program encourages healthy lifestyles for boys and girls in PNG while boosting their physical, social, literacy and maths skills.”

Mr Smith said he would visit a primary school and a mission to see the program first-hand while in PNG.

THE SP PNG Hunters and Digicel has confirmed that Saturdays top of the table clash against the Northern Pride will be telecast live on EMTV @ 2.30pm

PNGRFL CEO Brad Tassell said that full credit should be given to Digicel for providing the telecast to EMTV;

“Its fantastic that Digicel have provided the rights to telecast the match to EMTV this weekend and for the remainder of the season. Without Digicels investment in the rights to secure the telecast, fans across the nation would not get to see the Hunters play and they should be applauded for giving this gift to the people of PNG.

PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka also said:

“The PNGRFL and the SP PNG Hunters are very appreciative of Digicels efforts. We would also like to commend EMTV for recognizing the value of the telecast to fans across the country. I’m sure there will be a lot of happy people across the nation when they hear the news.”

Digicel Managing Director John Mangos said the network was dedicated to bringing not only SP PNG Hunters home games to viewers but also away games;

“From my understanding this has never been done in the Intrust Super Cup competition and is up there on par with the coverage NRL clubs enjoy. We have over 7 million fanatical fans in PNG who will; be glued to their television sets on Saturday and I thank EMTV for joining the party with us to get the coverage to as many fans as possible. Digicel are committed to the Hunters and the people of PNG and this is our way of saying thank you.”

“We are also working hard on initiatives such as live streaming and improving the quality of the broadcast. We believe the Hunters are the dawning of a new era in Rugby League in PNG and we are very happy to be a part of that as a foundation sponsor and telecast partner to the competition.”

The match will also be broadcast on Hitron channel 102 and Ch8 on Channel 21. Kick-off is at 2.30pm, with tickets available from Agmark Hardware in Kokopo or at the gate on game day.

Northern Pride down PNG Hunters 34 - 18

By Martin LIri
The SP PNG Hunters have suffered their first loss in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup when competition leaders Northern Pride pulled off a hard-fought 34-18 win in Kokopo.
The loss put a dent in the competition newcomers’ roller-coaster ride who had already posted three wins from three games.
It was also sweet revenge for the Pride particularly for coach Jason Demetriou who would have finally got one over his arch rival Michael Marum.
Forty-year-old Marum has been a nemesis to Demetriou, guiding Agmark Gurias to 29-22 win over Pride in 2013 during an off-season trial and last month delivered a similar blow to the Cairns-based side 26-16 in the Far North Queensland capital in the Hunters pre-season trial.
This time away from home it was Demetriou’s turn to be celebrating as his team won the wrestle for the outright leadership in the top-of-the-table clash following the six tries-to-three victory.
But in front of the largest crowd since the Kalabond Oval has hosted visiting Queensland sides, the game was in the balance at half-time with the scores locked at 12-all.
The Pride realising that if they continued to use their taller forwards and sent away offloads in tackles, lifted their tempo in attack around the Hunters ruck area and use grubber kicks behind the opposition’s defence – the points would come.
And that is exactly how the game unfolded as forward Tyrone McCarthy celebrated with a double with an imposing performance.
Fellow forwards Ethan Lowe, Blake Leary and Ben Spina also did their part with halfback Sam Obst and five-eighth Shaun Nona pointing their team to which side of the field to launch their attacks.
Nona had a solid game picking up a personal tally of 14 points from a try and five goals.
Centre Davin Crampton was a busy man stealing important metres and was rewarded with a try as did wingers Justin Castellaro and Javid Bowen.
Hunters coach Marum admitted that they went down to a better side on the day.
The Hunters gave themselves every chance to beat last year’s minor premiers but undid the positive foundation they created with basic errors.
“In defence we were not slowing them down.”
The Pride gained crucial metres in the middle of the ruck and the quick-play-the-balls forced the Hunters into giving away penalties which provided the visitors the ascendency to continue the roll in the second half.
The weather was also kind to them in the closing 40 minutes as it rained and became cooler compared to the unbearable heat in the first stanza. The Pride just continued to revel in the conditions to put the finishing touches to the advantage.
Scorers for the Hunters were wingers Garry Lo and George Benson and forward David Loko while Noel Zeming kicked three goals.
“They (Pride) are a very good side, that’s why they are on top of the ladder,” Marum said.
The Hunters were told after the match to put that loss behind them get back into the routine as they prepare for the fifth round clash against 2013 grand finalists Easts Tigers this weekend.
The next game is also an away match against Ipswich Jets before they return to Kalabond on April 12.

PNG HUNTER'S WINGERS ARE IN SUPERB FORM

THEY are not the tallest men on the rugby league field but play as if they were 2-metres tall.
After four weekends Papua New Guinea Hunters wingers Gary Lo and George Benson have proven they belong on the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) Cup scene.
You would be forgiven for thinking that Lo (171cm) from Anducks, Western Highlands and Benson (162cm) from Wabag, Enga,  do not fit the bill to play at this level.
That thought was quickly erased after their heroic performances against the Redcliffe Dolphins in the opening match and in the three home matches against the Mackay Cutters, Central Queensland Capras and the Northern Pride.
So impressed were some with Lo’s efforts that some comentators  likened his workrate and involvement as similar to former Australian Kangaroos winger Rod Wishart.
While Benson was nothing short of a human canon ball with his probing runs through traffic off the right-wing.
Both have been nothing short of electric with Lo continuing a winning combination with centre Thompson Teteh and Benson the same with Albert Patak to complement their forwards in the middle  third.
Both were drawn from the same nursery in the Western Highlands capital in Mt Hagen.  Lo attended Hagen Park and Benson at Hagen Secondary and interestingly enough debuted in the Digicel Cup with the Mount Hagen Eagles franchise as 17 and 18-year olds in 2010.
So you could say it was fate that denied their shot at last year’s World Cup to open the door for a dream start for the Hunters.
On Saturday, the duo experienced their first loss against the Northern Pride, but it was not for a lack of trying. Lo said he had a frustrating match and was denied several times short of the try-line, but gave credit to the gritty defensive effort of the Pride, for denying certain four-pointers.
After the match, both said the loss gave them an empty feeling with the hunger to back it up this Sunday against the Easts Tigers at Langlands Park, in their second away match. With Lo just turning 20 and Benson 21 in October last year, they are both at the perfect age to develop their game and realising every young man’s dream to play in Australia’s National Rugby League.
After four weekends, both have come off unscathed and continue to hold their spots and play an integral part of coach Michael Marum’s game plan. The national

THE Papua New Guinea Hunters have named an extended 20-man squad for Sunday’s Round 5 Queensland Cup match against the Easts Tigers in Brisbane.
Having fallen to a very good Northern Pride side 34-18 last Saturday in Kokopo, Michael Marum has reacted by naming a large squad for the trip to Queensland.
Included in the side is prop Timothy Lomai, who has been shifted to the backrow partnering David Loko at the expense of Brandy Peter who has been out of the squad.
In the other surprise selection, Kumul Dion Aiye has been given a shot in the 20 and could earn a bench spot as cover for captain Israel Eliab.
Noel Zemming retains the No.7 jumper of the back of his goal kicking which is certain to come into play at Langlands Park. Rugged  prop Esau Siune has been added to the extended bench.
