PNG Softball icon Jack Pidik has died

THE sporting fraternity, in particular softball, is mourning the passing of one of its pioneer players and a long-time administrator Jack Pidik.
Pidik, a man synonymous with softball, died peacefully in Cairns Hospital, Australia on Monday after a long illness.
From Matupit Island in East New Britain, Jack Pidik in his late 50’s, is survived by his Australian wife and three children and grand children. He was the Customer Services Manager with Air Niugini at the time of his death.
Described as solid baseball player, Pidik was a pioneer of softball after he made the transition from baseball.
He was among the talented pool of Matupit players which included Ron Rolly, Nick Tata and Mari Tatako, who founded Brown Eagles softball club.
During the year of transition from baseball to softball in 1972, Pidik was one of the stand-out players.
He played second base for Brown Eagles club in the formative years of softball in Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea.
Brown Eagles teammate and now PNG Power coach Isikel Tovia described Pidik as a great baseball player before making the switch to softball.
He was indeed a good mentor and very good organiser as well.
“We started Brown Eagles club together but later we went our separate ways – late (Jack) Pidik went on to team up with Gazelle and I went on to play for Elcom,” he said.
Pidik was in the first PNG softball team to play in Guam.
The softball governing body, the PNG Softball Federation paid a special tribute to one of the most influential person who touched many lives during his involvement with the family game as a player, coach, mentor and administrator.
The vice president of PNG Softball Federation Ralph Tarasomo said: “We have lost a champion of our game. A great leader whose inspiration ensured that the code excelled through difficult times, his attitude towards sports has made us proud today,” he said.
Tarasomo said many people like himself have all benefited from his wisdom.
He said Pidik taught them lessons in leadership, humility, generosity, courage and integrity. At the time of his passing he was the chairman of the board and a life time member.
Tarasomo said he would be sadly missed by everyone.
Port Moresby Softball League president Tom Sirae described the Pidik “an icon of the sport of softball”.
“A sad day for us all as Mr Pidik was a truly great softballer and one of the finest administrators of softball in PNG. POMSL heavily relied on his knowledge and mentoring. We are shocked and deeply aggrieved by Mr Pidik’s passing,” Sirae said.
Late Pidik went as far as the president of Port Moresby Softball Association, and then later he was voted in as president of PNG Softball Federation. He was the longest serving members until he was replaced by the then late Henry Kila and then Chris Bais.
PNG Softball Federation Chief Umpire Peter Chalapan described Pidik as a great administrator when he reigned as the president of PNG Softball in the late 80s and early 90s.  Chalapan said during national championships, he got his hands dirty to ensure technical officials were proper meals and decent accommodation for umpires flying in from other centres.
Former softball correspondent-turned-lawyer Ekonia Penia could not accept the sad news of someone he have always had high regard for and called “senior” for his great wisdom in the game of softball.
Pidik was the man behind the re-emergence of Gazelle softball club which went on to win 18 grand finals between 1979-80 to 2002-2003 seasons.  The national

21 year old Wellington Albert from Mendi, in the Southern Highlands Province has signed a two year contract with Penrith Panthers.
Albert made his way through the School Boy’s Rugby League program to join the Lae Snacks Cracker Tigers, before making it to Team Kumul.

Albert is due to leave for Australia in early January next year.

PNGRFL Interim CEO, Brad Tassell, announced today that Albert has agreed to the contract with the Penrith Panthers commencing in 2014. Albert will be released immediately from his PNG Queensland Cup contract to take up the Penrith offer and will start training with Penrith in early January.

The contract will see Albert start with the Penrith U20 squad in 2014 with a guaranteed top 25 first grade player contract in 2015. Tassell said after weighing interest from other NRL clubs. Player Agent, Steve Deacon, and Albert felt the Panther’s offer was the best balance for Albert’s welfare on and off the field.

Sandis Tsaka, Deputy Chairman of the PNGRFL, also said Albert had a very good group of experienced people around him to ensure he is successful and to guide him right through his Career.

Wellington has received great support every step of the way from his friend and family, from the NRL Penrith Group and from PNGRFL. EMTV

Big moments in Queensland  Cup

$

International expansion, inclusion in a National Championship, heading back to the bush and good old-fashioned rivalries underpin what promises to be the most exciting Intrust Super Cup season in history. Here are the seven moments we think will capture the imagination of the rugby league public not only in Queensland but throughout the country.
1. Ahead of the game. With Round 1 kicking off on Saturday, March 1, the Intrust Super Cup will have a week’s head-start on both the NRL and NSW Cup competitions, giving clubs the perfect opportunity to whet the appetite of local footy fans and give their gate-takings a boost. The potential is there for an influx of NRL stars to be available for the opening game of the season but the key will be to put in the type of performance that encourages fans to come back next time there’s a home game.
2. Hunters land in Queensland. Capacity at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Oval is likely to be stretched to its limit when the PNG Hunters play their first historic clash in the Intrust Super Cup. With the match to also be televised by Channel Nine, interest in how the newcomers will fare in their first season is sure to be high, both from footy fans and other Intrust Super Cup clubs eager to get a read on what the team from PNG will bring. It will mark the start of a significant new chapter in PNG rugby league history and a challenging proposition for new coach Troy Lindsay and the Dolphins’ host of new signings.
3. Beyond borders. Welcome to the new toughest road trip in the Intrust Super Cup: the PNG Hunters at Kalabond Oval in Kokopo. This is the base for the Hunters for at least the next two seasons while Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby undergoes a major upgrade and it will be left to defending premiers Mackay Cuttersto find out just what kind of welcome visiting teams will receive. The Hunters play Mackay, Central Queensland Capras and Northern Pride in three consecutive games at home from Round 2 and if they can assert some home ground advantage in those opening weeks they might just find themselves near the top of the table after a month of football.
4. Inter-hate rivalry. Nothing quite unites Queenslanders like a hatred of anything from south of the border but that doesn’t mean they don’t square off amongst themselves from time to time. XXXX Rivalry Round in Round 10 will ‘celebrate’ the most bitter feuds in the Intrust Super Cup, the pick of which will be the clash between Burleigh and Tweed Heads. The Seagulls claimed the honours in both encounters in 2013 and with members of the Titans squad to be sprinkled through both teams, bragging rights will be eagerly sought. Each of the clashes in Round 10 are mouth-watering propositions with the Cutters and Pride to face off in a battle of the north, Souths Logan hosting Ipswich, Easts and Norths meeting at Langlands Park in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast  and Central Queensland to renew their hostilities. All this less than a month before Origin I.
5. Ivan the Magnificent. That will be the hope of long-suffering Sunshine Coast fans who welcome former Broncos coach Ivan Henjak into the fold having had to endure watching their Sea Eagles collect consecutive wooden spoons over the past two seasons. It’s a far cry from their premiership success of 2009 when Daly Cherry-Evans was steering the side around the park with Henjak taking the reins having won 27 of 51 games at the Broncos from 2009-2010 before being sensationally axed on the eve of the 2011 NRL season. The Sea Eagles are exploring a possible secondary affiliation with the Panthers in Sydney following a recent visit by Panthers general manager Phil Gould that would give Henjak’s playing roster a handy boost.
6. Bush week. A key directive of the Queensland Rugby League in recent years has been to engage more regularly with regional areas and a second dedicated Country Week in 2014 promises to take the Intrust Super Cup to new venues again. In 2013 matches were played in Roma, the Whitsundays, Toowoomba, Woodford and Yarrabah, an Aboriginal community 53 kilometres from Cairns and while the exact venues won’t be determined until a later date, but there will be some footy fans in far flung places thrilled to see top-level rugby league come to town.
7. National treasure. Depending on which leg is straddling the border between NSW and Queensland, it is very easy to have an argument with yourself as to which is the second-best rugby league competition in Australia: the VB NSW Cup or Intrust Super Cup. That debate will come to some sort of resolution when the first National Championship is held on NRL Grand Final day, pitting the two respective premiers against each other in a new breed of interstate rivalry. Of course, with the Warriors in the NSW Cup and PNG Hunters in the Intrust Super Cup, there remains the possibility of two overseas teams representing the respective competitions on the game’s greatest stage but whoever qualifies will have an entire state behind them. The formation of the National Championship will deliver a much more inclusive experience for everyone engaged in rugby league on Grand Final day and an extra carrot for the Intrust Super Cup champions. – NRL.com

PNG Q-CUP NAME UNVEILED

MICHAEL Marum’s men will be called the SP PNG Hunters.
The name Hunters was derived from a competition that the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) conducted and which received the most votes.
It is envisaged that to kick off PNG’s entry it needed a strong name that depicted its business like attitude to hunt all their prey before them to send a strong message across to the other clubs.
The Hunters have also been confirmed to wear the national colours of red, black and yellow when they play their opening game against Redcliffe in Brisbane on March 2.
Their first home game is against reigning champions Mackay Cutters on March 8 at the Kalabond Stadium in Kokopo.
The logo will be officially launched in early January, 2014.
Naming rights sponsor South Pacific Brewery through its flagship brand SP Lager has signed on a one year K1.5 million deal to back Papua New Guinea’s entry into the National Rugby League (NRL) second tier Intrust Super Cup competition in Queensland next year.
During the major announcement yesterday, SP Brewery managing director Stan Joyce said this is history in the making as they venture beyond and present PNG’s ‘nambawan’ team in PNG’s ‘nambawan’ sport by PNG’s ‘nambawan’ beer SP Lager.
“We are bringing international visitors here and giving them the confidence that we are able to stage regular international fixtures,” he added.
PNGRFL and SP PNG Hunters chief executive officer Brad Tassell backed up SP Lagers commitment, saying that it is a massive achievement not only for the PNGRFL but for all rugby league followers in the country.
“The primary goal is to give our players the tough week in week out competition they need for us to improve as a nation internationally,” Tassell said. “This will also provide our players with a pathway and opportunity to showcase their talents to prospective National Rugby League and Super League clubs and scouts,” Tassell added.
He stressed how important this programme is to the overall development of the game in Papua New Guinea. Tassell pointed out that the support by a well-respected company in the PNG business community is a significant contribution towards their plans to put in place a full-time professional programme to prepare local players to eventually enter the toughest competition in the world – the National rugby League.

2013 a good year for PNG Sports

OUR top sporting performers in 2013 were Toea Wisil, Theresa Tona and Steven Kari.
Netball, cricket and volleyball were the best performed teams sports in a year that rugby league fell short.
Track star Wisil won the 100m and 200m events at the Melbourne Track Classic in April giving her the distinction of being the fastest woman in Australia.
Theresa Tona, a two-time Olympian, won her first gold medal in taekwondo at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis & Futuna in September. Before that, Tona competed in an Australian tournament winning her 48kg division.
Kari produced a powerful performance at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Penang, Malaysia, last month. He won the junior and senior 94kg divisions, breaking the junior record in the process.
These three athletes showed they belong on the world stage with their efforts.
Wisil would also go on to qualify for the World Championships in Russia off her Australian performances.
Kari is assured a medal at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. And Tona is a favourite for the gold medal at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.
In team sports, our biggest let down were the Kumuls  who never got off the ground in 2013 in spite of the time, money and resources put in by coaches, players and administrators.
Their short-comings (in playing and coaching class) were exposed at the Rugby League World Cup in the United Kingdom in October-November.
The side only managed a single victory in 2013, a win over Scotland in a pre-World Cup warm-up. Outside of that performance everything else was decidedly under-whelming.
The only positives for league in 2013 were the subsequent signing of several Kumuls to British Super League clubs and boom youngster Wellington Albert earned a National Rugby League contract with the Penrith Panthers.
The announcement of a national side in the Queensland Cup was also cause for celebration in league circles.
But Kumuls could not match what the Pepes in netball and Barramundis in cricket achieved over the year.
Netball’s resurgence was in large part due to a revamped administration under national federation president Julienne Leka-Maliaki.
The Pepes showed they could match it with regional heavyweights Samoa and Cook Islands when they defeated both sides, somewhat surprisingly, at the Pacific Netball Series in Samoa earlier this year. A third place finish at the Nations Cup this month capped of a solid 2013 for netball.
In cricket, PNG’s reputation as a genuine competitor at the second tier of international cricket was demonstrated at the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in the Untied Arab Emirates last Month.
Led by batsman Tony Ura, the Barras got to with one game of qualifying for the T20 World Cup. Although they finished eighth in the 16-team tournament, they gained the respect of the best second tier nations such as Ireland, Netherlands, Afghanistan and Kenya.
The other sport to win on the road was the Amoa, the men’s national volleyball side. PNG came from two sets to one down to stun hosts and Pacific Games champions Wallis and Futuna in the men’s volleyball final in a five-set thriller at the Mini Games.
Soccer had a strong domestic season with the National Soccer League, Besta Cup and the various major competitions staging successful seasons.
Softball was another sport that had a  solid domestic season.
Rugby union had a year that yielded little from the Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions Cup and the sevens circuit.
AFL juniors continued to carry the national flag with the Binatangs competing well at the Queensland championships.
Hopefully those sports that under-performed in 2013 can pick up their game in the new year while those that reached great heights can carry the form forward into 2014.

PNG Barramundis primed

GAINING one-day international status and earning US$400,00 (K1 million) annually are some incentives the Papua New Guinea Barramundis are eyeing at this month’s ODI World Cup qualifiers in New Zealand.
The Hebou-sponsored Barramundis need to finish in the top six of the 10-team cricket competition, from Jan 8 to February 2, to be played in the South Island of New Zealand, in order to have a chance of playing any of the 10 test playing nations – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and South Africa.
To qualify for next year’s ODI World Cup in Australia, PNG must make the final. A top six finish by the Barras outside of the K1 million high performance funding, would also earn  them a place in International Cricket Council’s Intercontinental Cup during the year that involves T20, one-day and four-day matches on a home and away basis against the best second tier countries like Ireland, Afghanistan, the Netherlands, Kenya and Scotland.
Barramundis captain Chris Amini said yesterday that batting and an overall consistency of performance would be the keys to doing well.
The top order batsman said the Barramundis fielding and bowling had always been strong points of the side and said scoring runs was the area the Barras needed to be consistent in at the qualifiers.

2014 is the year of implementation for sports in PNG

IT IS three days into the new year. But sports administrators, team officials and particularly the athletes who are serious about their performance have already started work with their preparations.
Last year is history but that should not be totally lost on anybody’s memory unless they have had a complete mental breakdown. The experiences from the year gone by have to be rewound and the microscope trained on them. So that any mistakes made are not repeated. So that what brought success can be tailored into the new year’s programmes and the bar raised so the same thing can be done better.
For sports that are on the programme for the Pacific Games – the next 12 months is the time they have remaining to get themselves as well prepared as possible for 2015.
Papua New Guinea as host nation in collaboration with the Pacific Games Council have nominated 28 sports for the games programme cannot afford not to impress in front of an anticipated parochial home crowd.
Papua New Guineans will not expect anything less than being crowned the champion nation after the July 4 to 18 games in 2015.
In 1991 when Port Moresby and Lae co-hosted the games PNG topped the medal count with 44 gold medals to win the event.
This time only Port Moresby will host the games with more than 600 athletes and officials to make up the home team. That is expected to be the largest team compared to what the visiting countries will field.
And that must translate into the most number of medals to be won by the largest country in the Pacific.
With so much money – K760 million - to be spent on the Pacific Games on  infrastructure development such as venues, the games villages and related costs – Papua New Guineans will be expecting nothing but the best from Team PNG.
That’s money that could have been used on other important areas like roads and bridges to link up rural areas to accessible markets for the rural population to sell their produce so that they can feed themselves.
These monies could have been used to build better hospitals and clinics, beef up the medical drug supply to give the population better health services. Many other projects would start putting their hands up for such funding.
Instead it has been diverted to sports and the spin-offs like promoting the country’s image, giving tourism a shot in the arm among others that will be generated by the Pacific Games.
However, other sporting programmes which are not part of the Pacific Games but are and will be getting funds from the Government coffers over the next few years are not spared the high expectations from the PNG population.
They include the PNG Hunters franchise, which this week resumed training for its debut season in Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition this year.
PNG Rugby Football League officials have said that most of the K6 million needed to fund the operations of the team this year will come from corporate sponsors like SP Brewery, which have secured the naming rights.
But the Government is expected to prop them up with K1.5 million annually at least for this year and until they are self-sustainable in their five-year licence.
That’s money that can be put to better use elsewhere, many would argue.
So the Hunters must deliver as expected like the Pacific Games sports.

LEGA Siaka scored a memorable century to help Papua New Guinea crush Kenya by eight wickets in New Zealand yesterday.
The opening victory in Pool B of the One-Day Cricket World Cup qualifiers set the tournament alight.
Batsman Assad Vala joined Siaka in scoring a ton in New Plymouth as the Hebou-sponsored Barramundis chased down Kenya’s 249/9 with 43 balls to spare.
Siaka’s 103 runs came off 83 balls and saw the Hanuabada man  hit 11 4s and four 6s, while Vala cracked 105 from 109 deliveries (eight 4s and six 6s).
Siaka lost opening partner Tony Ura for a duck as Kenya’s attack found traction on a flat Pukekura Park pitch.
But Siaka and Vala  quickly put PNG back in the running for a million kina payout.
Kenya seemed to have a defendable total, with Collins Obuya’s 106 laying the foundation for their total.
Paceman Raymond Haoda Jr snared the 102-match veteran on his way to bagging 4-50. Mahuru Dai (1-19 off five overs) and Chris Amini (1-26 off eight overs) were economical.
Siaka brought up his century in style with a pull shot over square-leg for 6.  He was eventually dismissed for a classy 103 with the Barras on 154/2. Skipper Amini joined Vala and the pair went through unbeaten to guide the Barras home with 8 wickets in hand.
Not to be outdone, Vala also brought up his entertaining century with a six over the bowlers head as he finished unbeaten on 105.
Amini was also unbeaten on 28 as the pair put on 96 for the third wicket to cruise past the target with ease.
The Barramundis have a light session today followed by some more practice tomorrow before taking on Uganda on Thursday at Pukekura Park. PNG need to finish in the top six of the qualifiers (top three in their pool) to access International Cricket Council development funding worth more than a K1 million.
PNG are second in Pool B on two points behind The Netherlands (155/3), who have a better net run rate after beating Uganda (152) by seven wickets with 119 balls to spare.
Match Summary: Kenya 249/9 (50 Overs) (Raymond Haoda 4/50, Pipi Raho 47, Mahuru Dai 1/17, Chris Amini 1/26, Willie Gavera 1/56) lost to Papua New Guinea 250/2 (42.5 Overs) (Assad Vala 105*, Lega Siaka 103, Chris Amini 28*) by 8 wickets.

Albert's Visa was managed and processed through the PNGRFL by the PNG

Hunters Queensland Cup side and was approved by Australian Immigration on Monday.

The CEO of the PNGRFL and PNG Hunters, Brad Tassell, says a structure is firmly in place with the two organisations for processing of visas.

He says after reading various media reports about PNG players having trouble obtaining visas, it is recommended that they contact the PNGRFL in the first instance and notify them so they can be advised on the correct procedures required and assist in that process.

Forwards key to PNG SP Hunters success

THE PNG Hunters forwards are working up a sweat.
With a lot of expectations placed on the Hunters to do well in their debut season in Queensland’s Intrust Super Cup rugby league competition, it is the forwards who will shoulder the workload.
With a core of the PNG Kumul larger pool of players drafted into the team, coach Michael Marum and his assistants in Jason Tassell and Shane Morris are working to fine tune the SP Hunters’ mobile pack.
Marum said he does not see size as an issue but more so their ability to handle what is expected of them in the debut season.
“Basically it will come down to the two trial matches against the Northern Pride and Rockhampton to see who wants to get a starting role,” he said.
After working overtime to get the engine room into shape over the past few months, they are now starting to work on running the lines from the pattern they have in place.
The forwards were seen last week working in separate units – in two groups of combinations – with the two dummy halves Wartovo Puara Jnr and Lawrence Tu’u feeding the runners.
Both Tassell and Morris were keeping a close eye on the forwards while Marum was working with the backs collecting grubber and high kicks when The National caught up with their midday training session last Wednesday before heading to the pool.
With two weeks before their first pre-season trial match against the Northern Pride in Cairns on February 9, Marum is still toying with the combinations.
It will be interesting to see how things pan out with last year’s Digicel Cup hardliners in Gary Lo, Tiger Emere and George Benson pushing for a wing start and Lae Tigers duo Thompson Teteh, Willie Minoga and the untried Edward Goma adding pace for the contest in the centres positions.
While at fullback, it is a toss-up between Goroka Lahanis Adex Wera who looks to have earned his stripes but will have a strong challenge from Guria’s Albert Patak.
Patak, returning fully-fit from a season ending injury gives the team that extra try-scoring ability with his pace and guile.
Marum said with the heavy training out of the way they have now split the squad to work on their respective roles.  PNG Facts/The National

The PNG Hebou Barramundis faced a disappointing loss against United Arab Emirates today in their first Super Sixes game in the 50 Overs World Cup Qualifiers underway in New Zealand.

The Barras started their Super Sixes campaign losing by 150 runs after chasing a target of 281. PNG won the toss earlier and elected to field.

However, the boys went down by powerful bowling put on by the Arabs bowling them all out for 130 runs after 28.3 overs. In the UAE innings, a big century by Captain Khurram Khan helped the team score a total of 280 in just 48.3 overs.

The PNG bowlers did well with Willie Gavera taking out three wickets, Norman Vanua and Pipi Raho taking out two each while Mahuru Dai got one.

The Barras struggled in their innings with top batsmen Lega Siaka and Jason Kila going for a duck while the highest runs of 49 was made by Captain Charles Amini. PNGEDGE

PNGRFL & SP PNG Hunters Chairman Sandis Tsaka has today confirmed that the club has stood down Enock Maki for disciplinary reasons and breaching the clubs code of conduct. The decision was made after close consultation with the SP PNG Hunters Welfare Officer Mark Mom, CEO Brad Tassell and Head Coach Michael Marum, said Tsaka;“It’s tough but we have strict standards and a code of conduct that ALL players regardless of who they are must abide by with NO exceptions. The standards have been set from the start and ALL players know what is expected of them. We will take swift and immediate action to protect the club if discipline and acceptable behaviour standards are not met while contracted to the SP PNG Hunters.”“It is not a decision we take lightly but through consultation with our welfare officer, head coach and CEO, Enock left us with no choice but to take this action. It’s a hard lesson to learn but Enock must now go and rectify his problems before he will be considered again in the future. Our welfare officer will continue to provide guidance, support and advice and we will do everything we can to support Enock. How he responds and what actions he takes from now will determine his long-term future with the club.”Maki said he accepted the clubs decision;“It is my own fault and I fully accept the clubs decision. I let the club and myself down. I respect what Coach Michael Marum and the coaches are doing and I want to be a part of the club in the future and will work as hard as possible to prove I deserve another chance.”Head Coach Michael Marum said the program was not only about producing good football players;“Enock is young and has made a mistake and now he has to accept the consequences. All of the players know what’s required of them. This is not a part time, feel good program to make up the numbers. This is a serious program and we are serious about what we want to achieve for the players, the code in PNG and for our nation. The players need to take responsibility for their actions and realise they have consequences. That’s how we develop great football players and good people. I have no doubt with support from the coaches and our welfare officer we will see Enock back with the club in the future.

Versatile Larsen Marabe is ready to mix it with Gateshead Thunder on his Whitehaven debut – wherever he is asked to operate.
Larsen Marabe
The 28-year-old featured in the back-row off the bench in Papua New Guinea’s narrow World Cup defeat against France last year, stepping up to start at prop for the roughhouse clash with Samoa.
But he also starred at centre earlier in his career and is not concerned over where boss Dave Woods wants him to play in Sunday’s friendly.
“I will play where the coach picks me to play, and give it a go,” said Marabe, who opted to join Haven after Jessie Joe Parker and Rodney Pora, who had a short spell at the Recre last year, spoke highly of the club.
“Jessie was looked after, so I was really looking forward to coming. I wanted to play in a different country, a different environment, living with different people.”
Marabe hopes to repeat with Haven the success he enjoyed at home in Papua New Guinea.
He skippered Port Moresby Vipers to their first domestic premiership final in 21 years in September last year, after the prestigious match was officially kicked off by PNG prime minister Peter O’Neill.
And Marabe went on to earn man-of-the-match honours in the 36-14 win over minor premiers Goroka Lahanis.
“I have some experience of finals, and I’m looking forward to playing in them here,” he smiled.
“It’s my first year here, so I have to get to know the boys, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Marabe admits he’s not yet at his sharpest.
He said. “After the World Cup we had a break and went back to our villages. I’ve done some training but not a lot and have to get fitter. I still have some work to do.”
He returned home to play in World Cup year after a couple of seasons in Australia’s New South Wales Cup, following a stint with Featherstone Rovers.

In reply, Garamuts opener Riley Hekure was run out without facing a ball.

Fellow opener Kiplin Doriga dug in to make 51 before PNG were eventually dismissed for 138.
