PNG's Unitech vice-chancellor deported from PNG again

The vice-chancellor of Papua New Guinea’s University of Technology has expressed frustration after being deported from the country for the second time in a month.

Albert Schram has had a year long battle with the University Council which, despite having been replaced by the government, has effected his deportation by making what Dr Schram says were false statements to immigration officials.

Immigration officials refused the Dutch national entry to Port Moresby last month while issues surrounding Mr Schram’s appointment and the University Council were being addressed.

Dr Schram attempted to enter PNG again last week but was refused entry, and was told he needed to apply for a new visa and work permit.

However he says he never had trouble entering PNG during the past year on his current visa.

Dr Schram, who has significant support from students and the staff at Unitech in Lae, says he wants to return because he feels he has a mission to help the troubled institution. RNZI

THE Pacific Games Council is satisfied with the state of preparations for the 2015 Pacific Games that would be held in Papua New Guinea.

Council president Vidhya Lakhan and executive director Andrew Minogue visited Port Moresby from February 25 to March 1.

At the end of the visit, Lakhan noted very positive changes that had been delivered over the past 10 months under the new minister of sports. He said the council was impressed by the delivery plan of for the games facilities outlined by the venues, infrastructure and equipment committee and the organisational planning details developed by the games organising committee.

"These recent developments have satisfied the Pacific Games Council that PNG will be ready to host an excellent Pacific Games in 2015," Lakhan said.

"The council's confidence levels are improving rapidly.

"The fact the Bank of South Pacific has signed on to officially sponsor the games underscored the confidence that commercial sector and the stakeholders can have the 2015 Pacific Games will be a success."

He added more work remained to be done to meet the deadline and the council looked forward to seeing further improvements and developments, the next time they visited PNG.

"However, because of the considerable loss of time after 2009, critically important work remains to be done to meet the deadlines for the construction of the games facilities.

"The council urges all stakeholders to continue working co-operatively together to deliver all of the necessary facilities in a timely fashion.

"This includes the timely release of funds by the PNG government so that the necessary construction contracts can be let as and when required," Lakhan said.

In the Digicel Cup challenge, players and fans of Mendi Muruks have been assured the team will take part. The assurance came from the patron of the club, Percy Marai.

He explained that sponsor Tom Higgins is currently out of the country, resulting in a breakdown of communication between the PNG National Rugby League and club executives. It led to suggestions that the major club will not take part.

Executives of long time rugby league franchise commonly known as the SBSL Mendi Muruks are surprised with the decision by the PNGNRL to exclude Mendi Muruks in the semi-professional rugby league competition this season.

Parton of the Mendi Muruks Major Michael Percy-Marai has broken the silence on why the Muruks didn’t register their interest to participate earlier.

He says the main man behind the Muruks, Tom Higgins has been out of the country and is the point of contact for the franchise.

But there is promising news, as local MPs from the province led by Sothern Highlands Governor William Powi have vowed to back the Muruks up in terms of sponsorship.

Parton of the club Major Percy Marai has put to rest all the talk of the Medni Muruks missing out on the 2013 Digicel Cup season and rest assured the pride of the Southern Highlands will still stand tall come next month when the Digicel cup kicks off in Port Moresby. EMTV

LIONS AND MURUKS IN FOR DIGICEL CUP 2013

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013, Port Moresby- PNGNRL has revealed a revised competition for the Digicel Cup 2013 with an announcement of new inclusions being TNA Lions and Mendi Muruks late application for 2013 has been approved. Including new franchise sponsor for the Mt Hagen Eagles in Wamp Nga Group of Companies.

The entry of the Hela Wigmen, Wamp Nga Eagles, Mendi Muruks and TNA Lions is conditional and will be on a 1 year provisional lease subject to each franchise meeting the requirements of the PNGNRL this season.

This brings the Digicel Cup competition to feature (10) ten teams being the Stop N Shop Port Moresby Vipers, Gulf Isapea, Hela Wigmen, Enga Mioks, Wamp Nga Mt Hagen Eagles, Bintangor Goroka Lahanis, Agmark Guria, Snax Tigers, TNA Lions and Mendi Muruks. As well announcing the Digicel Cup kick off is now scheduled for April 14th.

General Manager Hubert Warupi stated that the Board had received the late application from TNA Lions and Mendi Muruks early in the week and discussed their application. The decision to accept TNA Lion was relatively easy as the franchise would be maintained by current franchise sponsor TNA Holdings, and on those grounds the PNGNRL Board granted the application.
While for the Mt Hagen franchise the Wantok Gaming System sponsorship has come to an end due to non commitment from the WGS sponsor.

Warupi further added that a very late application from a consortium of individuals and companies seeking to sponsor Mendi Muruks was received on the 16th March was considered and required to be assessed by the PNGNRL to ensure that the team met the stringent requirements of the PNGNRL, being that the team is sufficiently financed with a major sponsor, does have a home ground and players to field a team. Warupi added that although Mendi Muruks was an existing team the major difference was that the sponsors behind the team were not known and we needed to meet with consortium to ensure the team is financially sustainable, good value for the PNGNRL and provides for the best interests of the game.

The PNGNRL has approved eight (9) venues with new inclusion Tente Oval in Mendi to be the home ground for the Hela Wigmen and Mendi Muruks, while Mt Hagen will have Rebiamul and Kagamuga ovals to use and Goroka the NSI Venue and Sir Danny Leah Oval as spare. Digicel Cup fixtures are now being finalised to be circulated within the week.

In other news, a referee refresher program will be conducted in Port Moresby from the 22nd to 23rd March for selected Digicel Cup match officials in readiness for the bumper season ahead, a total of 30 referees from around the country will undergo a high performance referee program which will be facilitated by the PNGNRL. The Digicel Cup referees have the privilege to have National Gaming Control Board as naming right sponsor for the 3rd year now.

Fiji Under-20 football star Rusiate Materereqa says his side will have to pick up the pace when they play New Zealand on Wednesday.

The Nadi rep, who is the top goal scorer in the competition so fare with three strikes, will be the key man for the side.

He adds, Fiji will have to be on top of its game to stand a chance of beating the Junior All Whites.

“Looking forward to that game against NZ. Every team which comes to the tournament wants to win the tournament and not only participate, especially New Zealand as they are the favorites for the tournament and it will be a tough match for us.”

Fiji Under-20 skipper Jale Dreloa says they have been weak in defence at times and need to work hard in rectifying this in the next two days.

“We have to look at our defence as some of the defence is lacking in marking the players and not reading the game very well.”
Fiji is on a bye today."

Meninga hopes for PNG to be competitive in Rugby World Cup

$

0
Mal Meninga has been a big factor in Queensland's dominance of State of Origin over the past seven years and now he's turning his attention further north.

Papua New Guinea has always been a hotbed of exceptional rugby league talent but without the right infrastructure they've never quite unlocked the formula to harnessing their potential.

But that might all be about to change after the Maroons' supercoach was hired by the PNG government to turn the country's national sport into a genuine contender at international level.

As High Performance Director for Team Kumul, Meninga is looking to turn the national side, coached by another Queensland great, Adrian Lam, into a smokey to fear in future World Cups

"There's so many people playing rugby league up here," Meninga told Fox Sports News.

"I've been coming here for such a long time and you can see the talent but we sort of just need to take it to another level and that's what the high performance program is all about.

"That's why we're implementing best practice, state of the art coaching programs so they can start to reach their potential."I believe they can make rapid improvement and hopefully we'll see a direct result of that from their performances in the World Cup this year."

But even if the 2013 World Cup comes too soon, Meninga is confident the five year program he has been charged with implementing could translate into a World Cup semi-final appearance, and maybe even a final, in the not too distant future.

"A semi-final and hopefully a final performance - that's a dream and a vision, but hopefully I think it's achievable. We'll see what happens but I think there's tremendous potential and enormous development opportunities for them," Meninga said.

"They can be a surprise packet. It all depends on the strides they make.

"It's going to take time but I believe if we keep implementing the right processes for all the right reasons rugby league up there will prosper."

Meninga begins training PNG's rugby league team

Australian rugby league legend Mal Meninga has begun training Papua New Guinea's national rugby league team.

Meninga signed on last month to become the Kumuls' high performance director for the next five years.

He says his first priority is to get the side ready for the 14th Rugby League World Cup to be held in England and Wales this October.

"My short term goal is to make sure the players understand what is necessary to get to the next level," he said.

"That's what we're doing at the moment, trying to build a culture, a set of values, a philosophy for the players to understand what they need to do individually and as a group."

In Papua New Guinea, rugby is a national obsession and the high profile acquisition has given the team a big morale boost.

Meninga has put the players through their paces at the first training session for the year.

Kumuls second-rower, Larsan Marabe, says he is excited to be working with Meninga.

"For me, for myself, I'm so proud that I'm going to learn something out of him," he said.

"Get much better and fitter and play with the best in the world cup."

Kumuls coach, Adrian Lam, says having Meninga will help the team improve their fitness levels, which he says are at about 50 per cent compared to the international standard.

"We feel that if we can get them to a level that's equal with Australia, New Zealand and England, we feel we can really compete," he said.

"Once we add in the 'Mal Meninga factor' and also coaching on a full-time basis."

Papua New Guinea certainly doesn't lack raw talent, but it has struggled to prove itself on the world stage.

Despite this, Meninga is confident the team can grow to be a major presence in world rugby.

"The World Cup's coming back down to the southern hemisphere in 2017," he said.

"I want to see Papua New Guinea host World Cup games here in Papua New Guinea and also be successful." ABC

WHITEHAVEN'S RODNEY PORA RETURNS TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Whitehaven prop Rodney Pora has returned home to Papua New Guinea to be with his young son, who is seriously ill in hospital.

The experienced international had been due to feature for Haven in yesterday’s Championship clash with Barrow Raiders, which they won 30-18. But on learning of his son’s condition, the club supported his decision to fly home.

“We wish him well, and hopefully everything will be all right,” coach Dave Woods said, post-match. “He’s at the airport waiting for a flight.

“It is disappointing that he’s had to go, but his family must come first, and we have to make sure we look after him that way.

“It’s very important that he gets home for his family.”

On Twitter, hooker Carl Sice later dedicated the derby win to Pora and fellow front-rower Dave Houghton, who also missed the game. Pora missed Haven’s pre-season regime and had been working hard on his fitness over recent weeks, rewarding Woods with his debut try last week.

“Jordan Hand stepped up and did a great job, and we brought in Bradd Crellin, who looked after the back-row area, so it worked out all right for us,” added Woods, who saw Crellin justify his selection with a dummy-half try yesterday.

Blue 'rat' James Maloney gets rap from Maroons Thursto

$

MAROONS playmaker Johnathan Thurston has called rival five-eighth James Maloney a "rat" and tailor-made for State of Origin.

While Thurston admits to being surprised New South Wales has handed Maloney his first Blues jersey over incumbent Todd Carney, he expects the Roosters No.6 to be a handful.

The Maroons veteran believes NSW went with Maloney for the series opener in Sydney on Wednesday because of the excellent understanding he has with Blues halfback Mitchell Pearce.

The duo has formed a lethal combination at the Roosters and Thurston feels Maloney has a positive effect on Pearce.

"Jimmy's got a really calming influence on Pearcey and that's helping his game," the Cowboys star said.

"And Jimmy's just a rat and loves it. "He's made for this arena, no doubt.

"He'll thrive on it. It's his debut game and we all need to apply a bit of pressure to him."

Set to play his 25th game for Queensland, Thurston is obviously a Maloney admirer.

"He's just got that niggle in his game," Thurston said.

"He loves the contact, he loves to run the ball. He's got a fair bit of lip on him as well."

There is a chance Thurston will not get a chance to provide Maloney with an Origin baptism of fire.

Fiancee Samantha Lynch is heavily pregnant with their first child and Thurston has committed himself to being by her side and missing Origin I if need be.

He is confident it will not come to that, and what is more, his long-time partner does not want her man to get distracted.

"We're very confident it won't come on Wednesday," he said.

"She's really good, Samantha. She said before I left to make sure I concentrate and do a job down here and making sure that I prepare the best that I can.

"Everything else on the home front is pretty good at this stage."

Reynolds claims last Blues spot

$

NSW coach Laurie Daley has defended bringing John Sutton and Josh Reynolds into camp for two days before deciding on who would fill the bench spot vacated by the injured Kurt Gidley for next Wednesday's State of Origin opener.

Canterbury's Reynolds was given the nod over Sutton on Thursday with chief selector Bob Fulton believed to have overruled the coach who initially wanted the South Sydney five-eighth and back-rower in his side to face Queensland.

Sutton will rejoin the squad after Souths' clash with St George Illawarra on Saturday with Reynolds to become the 54th Blues debutant since 2005 - the last time NSW won a series.

The pair trained against one another on Thursday morning but Daley said Reynolds' ability to play hooker is what got him over the line.

And he said he couldn't understand why there had been criticism levelled at him for looking at two players he thinks are capable of playing Origin.

"It was one of those things where we wanted to have a bit of time, and I don't know what the fuss is all about as Queensland have named 19 players," Daley said.

"Yet all the focus has been on us naming 18 players. The decision to rule Kurt out was made, it was Tuesday.

"48 hours later we've made a decision and there's six days to go before the game.

"We're quite comfortable with the way we've handled it."

Daley was keen to use Sutton's size off the bench and his ability to play in the halves and also in the back-row was something that impressed the coach.

However, with there being no obvious choice to play at hooker should Robbie Farah get an injury, the selectors felt it was vital to include the feisty Reynolds, who plays five-eighth for the Bulldogs and can play a dummy-half and lock.

"We thought John can play in the back-row, and we have another couple of guys already around there that we can move around," he said.

"Josh plays the type of role where he doesn't know when he is going to go on, where he's going to play and how many minutes he's going to play.

"We wanted to be 100 per cent sure it was the right decision, we wanted to analyse training and everything that could possibly go wrong.

"At the end of the day Josh's versatility and his ability to play hooker was just too strong."

Daley said telling Sutton he'd missed out on the chance to make his Origin debut was one of the hardest things he's ever done.

"I really felt for John and you could see the reaction in his face," he said.

"He was trying to stay as positive and as upbeat as he possibly could. It's never nice or something you like to do."

While Daley was informing sections of the media of the decision at an impromptu press conference at the team hotel in Coogee, social media went into overdrive claiming Sutton had been given the nod.

The NSWRL mistakenly tweeted Sutton's selection without the knowledge or consent of the NSW team media manager.

The NSWRL later issued a statement saying it had erroneously picked up the information from other news reports without confirming it was correct.

PNG Rugby League to focus on grassroots

The new chairperson of the Papua New Guinea Rugby League Federation says he wants to focus on improving the game at the grassroots level.

Don Fox was elected chair of the new board at last week’s AGM in Lae, the first in four years following a period of infighting and court battles.

He says supporting the Kumuls on their path to the Rugby League World Cup is the new board’s immediate priority but they’re also keen to invest in the next wave of talent.

“Get the kids off the street and onto the footy fields playing football, kicking footballs, doing whatever kids do these days. If we can then move from the grassroots into the middle class areas what we want to do is bring back our inter-zone championships this year, and that will happen. We’re moving in the right direction - we’ve got the best people looking after the top-end of our players and we can look after the middle and the bottom end of it.

Papua New Guinea netball coach Annie Iamo says the country’s second-place finish in the Pacific Series is a big boost to their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

The Pepes beat the Cook Islands 67- 53 in their final match last week in Apia, following an opening loss to Fiji and a narrow win against Samoa.

Two victories is a big improvement on their bottom-placed finish in the previous three tournaments.

With only 12 teams contesting next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in Scotland in the United Kingdom, Annie Iamo says it’s a big lift for the Pepes who are ranked 20th.

Selectors have opted for a side that features only four veterans in captain Aaron Miai, Douglas Guise, Tisa Kautu and Adeck Naio plus experienced sevens players Albert Levi Jr and Henry Liliket.
The winner of the tournament will go on to play Fiji next year to qualify for the Rugby World Cup in 2015 in England.

The Cook Islands, perhaps the Pukpuks biggest threat, arrive tomorrow.
The men from the French territory will take on the Cook Islands on Saturday while the Monier Pukpuks take on the Solomon Island Hunters.
Tahiti coach Teiki Dubois said on arrival that they would be expecting a tough match against the Cook Islands.
“This would be our first time to compete in the Oceania Cup and we know that all the teams will put up a good challenge during the two-week tournament,” Dubois said.
He said the team had a few lead-up matches against New Caledonia and a local team The Barbarians in preparation. Captain Tunui Anania said that the team would play their best and hopefully get some wins with their inclusion of six players from France.

THE PNG Rugby Football League and the Team Kumul High Performance Unit yesterday announced a 24-man squad for Kumul Camp 4.
The high performance camp to be held in Port Moresby from July 22-25 will focus on the progression of the skills, attitude and knowledge of the Papua New Guinea-based players.
Lae Tigers Fijian prop Petero Sanivalu has been named in the squad along with Tigers teammate George Benson and Goroka Lahanis lock Bernard Tatsim.
Enga Mioks prop Esau Siune makes a return to camp after missing out on camp three. Albert Patak and Mark Mexico were not considered because of injury.
Team Kumul coach Adrian Lam said the players were building well to World Cup.
“We are continuing to build on what we’ve done in the previous camps and what the players have been tasked to do in between camps.
“We are getting closer to the business end of the year where we plan to have several matches, which will culminate in the selection of our PNG National team to go to the Rugby League World Cup.
“The National selectors have done a wonderful job in keeping us informed and have recommended a couple of new players to be invited to attend this camp, which Mal and I are excited about,” Lam said.
The camp will see the attendance of the national selectors who will get to experience first hand what the invited players get put through.
Chairman David Tinemau said that it would be a great opportunity to experience the camp environment and how the players cope.
“It will be good to see the players in a highly professional environment which will prepare them for representing PNG.
“It gives us a different perspective on the players attitude and attributes compared with the usual 80 minutes that we see them playing against each other.
“We have bolstered the numbers of this camp to 24.
“There have been a few injuries, notably Albert Patak and Mark Mexico, but we also want to have a closer look at a few new players as well and how they perform under the high performance camp training.
“Having said that, we are still keeping a close eye on a large group of players who won’t be attending this camp.”
The players will assemble in Port Moresby on Monday following their Round 15 commitments with the PNGNRL competition.
