The under construction Hubert Murray Stadium is set to be the final destination
for the Papua New Guinea Hunters.
Earlier this week, web media outlet
looppng.com announced the moving of the SP-sponsored team out of the Bomana
Police College to the Queen Emma Lodge in Kokopo while waiting for the Hunters
Village to be completed, which should be by the end of next month.
The
newly-accorded Hunters venue was mentioned by the Minister for Sports and
Pacific Games Justin Tkatchenko, pictured, during a tour of the sports icon –
which is 10 per cent complete – in Konedobu, Port Moresby, on Wednesday.
The
Sports Minister along with the six trustees, Babani Maraga, William Skate
Junior, Ovia Oala Rarua, Peter Tsiamalili Jr, Kostas Constantinou and chairman
Sir Mick Curtain, were at the stadium to review the progress of works carried
out while Sir Mick ran through the progress of the stadium works to the minister
and other trustees. Tkatchenko said after the stadium was complete it would
accommodate all Hunters games, while the Hunters Village in Kokopo, East New
Britain would be left to Agmark to facilitate sporting activities for the
people of East New Britain.
The western stands, directly opposite the Royal
Papua Yacht Club will seat up to 5000 and will be the only stand with a roof,
office space and corporate boxes, while the northern end, facing the Kone field,
will have up to 10 food outlets.
The northern and southern stands will seat
up to 4000 while the eastern stands, near the IPA (Investment Promotion
Authority) Haus will seat 7000.
Tkatchenko thanked Sir Mick Curtain and
lauded the Private-Public – Partnership (PPP) deal struck late last year which
saw work at the stadium began early January this year.
Due to the nature of
the works and time factor, the stands with their seating have been
pre-fabricated off-site and when the foundation is laid, the prefabricated
material will be lifted in to complete the structures before the Pacific Games
next year in Port Moresby.
