IF Marmin Barba is anything like his older brother, he will pose a threat for the PNG Hunters collecting their fourth win in Round Six of the Queensland Cup rugby league challenge.
The 22-year-old younger sibling of Brisbane Broncos NRL star Ben Barba has already made an impact coming off the bench with four tries for the Ipswich Jets.
Barba who recently joined his brother on the Broncos roster on a two year contract, is making use of the opportunity with their feeder club.
In recent weeks it has been Barba and fullback Wes Conlon that have caused havoc with their flair.
With flair being a major asset to the Hunters resolve as well so far, Michael Marum’s men will have to make sure of those tackles.
The Hunters franchise, sponsored by SP Brewery have been put on the ropes on several occasions through lack of discipline, but their flair has always saved them.
Coach Marum is not fazed by the prospect of keeping an eye on certain players but did indicate that there were too many times players were falling off missed tackles.
“It’s an area that we are aiming to polish up on as we have been punished in our last few matches and were basically defending all day,” he said.
Marum further said that maintaining ball possession for a set of six with a good kick down-field is all they are working on for a more disciplined approach.
Marum also confirmed that centre Thompson Teteh has been ruled out through injury and Edward Goma misses his debut chance as the two players cut.
Workaholic backrower Adam Korave returns from injury to the bench and Joe Bruno was named 18th man.
Marum said the inclusion of Dion Aiye does give them that extra playmaker’s role with skipper Israel Eliab likely to start in the centres.
Like most of the teams Marum doesn’t know much about his opponents, but with a former Kumul in Rod Griffin named in the Jets front-row, he knows the Hunters are facing an experienced campaigner at this level of the game.
Griffin, a 2008 World Cup Kumul tourist is considered one of the ‘tough men’ on the fringes of the NRL.
The team flies out tomorrow.
Fixtures: Norths Devils vs Northern Pride, Redcliffe Dolphins vs CQ Capras, South Logan Magpies vs Manly Seagulls, Mackay Cutters vs Tweed Heads, South Coast Falcons vs Burleigh Bears.
